When playing the piano, understanding the dynamics specific to reading symbols is crucial for interpreting and expressing musical pieces effectively. Dynamics in music notation refer to the volume or intensity with which a passage of music is to be played. This element adds depth and emotion to a piece, guiding the pianist on how loudly or softly to play specific notes or sections.

In piano music, dynamic markings are usually indicated by symbols and Italian terms.

Some common dynamics symbols you may encounter are:

1. Piano (p) - Play softly

2. Forte (f) - Play loudly

3. Mezzo Piano (mp) - Play moderately softly

4. Mezzo Forte (mf) - Play moderately loudly

5. Pianissimo (pp) - Play very softly

6. Fortissimo (ff) - Play very loudly

7. Crescendo (abbreviated as cresc.) - Gradually increase the volume

8. Decrescendo or Diminuendo (abbreviated as decresc. or dim.) - Gradually decrease the volume

9. Sforzando (sfz) - Play forcefully or with a sudden accent

When reading piano music, these symbols provide essential guidance on how to convey the composer's intended expression and mood. By incorporating dynamics into your playing, you can create contrast, shape phrases, and evoke different emotions within a piece.

Remember to pay attention to these dynamic markings as you practice and perform on the piano, as they play a significant role in bringing the music to life and engaging your audience.

I have added Midi velocity to the diagram above. MIDI velocity measures the force with which a key is pressed on a MIDI electric keyboard, ranging from 0 to 127, influencing the volume and characteristics of the sound produced.
