MISSION

Customized to cater to each student's unique musical aspirations, my lessons help individuals connect with the music they wish to learn. With numerous entry points, piano proficiency is achievable with ease and enjoyment as the top priority.

APPROACH

Developing a solid foundation of coordination and musical understanding enables students to contextualize and explore music at their own pace. Each lesson is structured to introduce practical and theoretical skills, with particular care given to the style of learning each student responds best to.

Classical and contemporary learning approaches differ based on the unique skill requirements of each music style. Proficiency in piano playing requires a blend of classical and contemporary exercises and tools.

BUILDING A SOLID FOUNDATION

A solid foundation includes the following focus areas;

1. Developing good technique, co-ordination and dexterity at the piano - using scales, exercises and songs, students will learn hand independence and agility.

2. Confidence with rhythm and time-feel - by establishing rhythmic exercises early in the learning process, students learn to enjoy rhythm and connect reading rhythm with feeling rhythm.

3. Sight reading music and song charts - a structured method for both score and chart reading will be taught so students can confidently approach both contemporary and classical music with ease.

5. Exploring harmony - discovering the mechanics of music is incredibly valuable. This will not only give a deeper understanding of the music students play, but will also provide the tools for composition and improvisation.

6. Listening skills and ear training - this will enable students to flourish both at the piano and away from the piano. By critically listening to music, students build awareness of dynamics and feel. By developing ear training skills students will be able to listen for melodic and harmonic patterns in music for transcription and improvisation.

Areas of specialization include RCM grade preparation, pop/rock piano method, jazz piano method, songwriting and composition, home recording setup, ear training, and music theory.
