Hand & Finger Posture


Roll your fingers sequentially across a surface like you are impatient or waiting in thought; this finger action and finger curve as a starting point for correct finger posture when playing piano. Keep your fingers curved and relaxed. There should be minimal tension when playing, with your wrist and arm relaxed and tension free. Let gravity do the work.

  • Hand Position – Hands and Arms Relaxed - 5 fingers across keys

  • Finger specifications – stay curved and relaxed – minimal effort when playing

  • Wrist -  Relaxed and Tension Free


Various Hand & Finger Actions


  • Plucking Pull back on key. Scraping fingers toward you.

  • Pressing Quiet Hand Position

  • Striking From the Wrist

  • Pushing From the Arm and Shoulders



Finger Placement on Keys


  • Outer Key (Key Tip/End) When playing across white keys only

  • Middle Key When playing across both white and black keys

  • Inner Key (Closer to Piano Board) When playing black keys with minimal white keys
